I have a dual-housing RV lamp with a three-position switch that also controls secondary work lights in the hatch, and a magnetic safety cut-off switch in the D-pillar and hatch panel to kill the hatch lights when the hatch is closed. You can go really crazy with this if you want. The switch doesn't have to be fancy, just something to open and close the ground leg Another option is to find the wire in the D-pillar and put a small little switch there. Some people have wired small toggle switch from radio shack into the side of the lamp housing to provide the interrupt. However almost all of them have a broken switch, because the plastic tends to melt when the lamp is left on for extended periods. Usually there is a button on the lamp to interrupt the purple w/ yellow wire so that you can turn it off when neededĪlmost all of the XJs came with a switch on the lamp. The pink wire will provide battery constant power (so the lights will work when a door is opened), the yellow wire provides switched ground from the forward cabin (activated with doors and the dash light switch), and a purple wire w/ yellow stripe provides switched ground from the latch mechanism in the hatch (only activates cargo lamp). Going to try a different dealer soon.Typical setup for wiring is constant power with two switched grounds.
( Like I couldn't of done that.) NOT what I asked for or what the manual indicates.
The tech just reset the drivers menu for interior lights to 10 seconds. Update: I asked my dealer to do this retiming effort when the car was in there last week. ( It hasn't been in my months of leaving the hatch open daily.) I do think it is a PITA when you want the car to go dark quickly as when visiting campgrounds, drive in movies. That said, I don't think a handful of LED lights staying on for 20 min is a worry for battery drain.
I'm thinking I'm going to have that time reprogramed to default at just a few min. Right now, if you leave your tailgate open (without fooling the latch), all interior lights set to key on the door as well as the mirror approach lights will remain on for 20 min. If I'm reading this right, page 298 of the owners manual says the dealer has the ability to reprogram the timer setting for the interior light circuit ( of which the mirrors are tied to). There are 2 (two) ways to turn off these lights. There is a way to hack & bypass the approach & puddle lights when the back tailgate is open. Replace the # 26 red 10amp fuse, & all goes back to normal.īoth will eliminate battery drain, anoying lites wile camping for you and others around you. Remove the fuse, the mirror LED lamps will be off. The # 26 fuse is red 10 amp & is identified as “Back Up” on the fuse panel door.
Looking at the fuse panel, from the lower left side, move over 2 & up 3.

Now to reverse this process either using the key fob, or the button on the dash to close the tailgate, press it several times until the tailgate is fully latched closed.Ģ. The car now thinks the tailgate is closed & the mirror LED lamps will go off as they would as if the tailgate is closed. You can also use a flat blade screwdriver, but it may scratch the metal.
